Who we are
Scottish Pig Producers’ collaborative and innovative approach was evident in the establishment of the first slaughter disease surveillance scheme in the UK back in 2003.
Wholesome Pigs (Scotland) Ltd was the producer co-operative formed by SPP to manage the health scheme, where pig carcases are regularly monitored post-slaughter to assess the presence of any clinical disease. Quarterly reports from each pig herd are then sent to each producer and their vet.
This combination of health monitoring and rapid feedback provide benefits in terms of reduced use of antibiotics and medicines, potential eradication of diseases, reduced production costs and the ability to promote a healthy more ‘wholesome’ product in the market.
Building on the initial approach of Wholesome Pigs, Scottish Pigs now operates a comprehensive range of health, welfare and sustainability improvement initiatives, including:
- PRRS Control & Elimination Scotland (PCES), including on-farm biosecurity audits and training
- The Scottish Pig Health Network (SPHN) mapping and information system
- The Scottish Pig Disease Control Centre, for outbreaks of emerging or exotic diseases
- The Scottish SPCA welfare partnership
Past projects
Scottish Pigs has also led or taken part in projects that have now been completed, including:
- The PL2020 pleurisy project
- Pig Insights – using AI to turn pig health data into practical intelligence
